This page contains answers to common questions handled by
our support staff, along with some tips and tricks that we have found useful and
presented here as questions.
Note: In these answers we will follow a few shorthand
conventions for describing user-interface procedures. Key combinations will be
presented like this: Ctrl+Alt+Delete, which means that you should press
and hold down the Control key, the Alt key, and the Delete key at the same time.
Menu selections will be presented like this: File->Open, which means
that you should open the File menu, and then make the Open selection.

You can request a dialup password or get information on an existing account
using the menu system when you logon to SageNet from any Campus computer.
Choose item #3 in the main menu and then item #3 again in the resulting
submenu. Your request will be automatically processed during the night and the
information you need to dial in will be e-mailed to your Sage account.
If you do not use the menu system by default at login, you can launch the
menu by typing "menu" (don't type the quotes) at the Unix prompt
(the % sign).
For security reasons, it is not possible to send this information to
another email account or to give this information over the telephone.
After getting your Dial-Up Password read "How
to set up a PPP Connection"

Users who telnet into Sage from an outside service provider (Roadrunner,
AOL, etc.) or want to FTP files from their Home directories will need a Proxy
Account to gain access to SageNet.
You can request a Proxy Account using the menu system when you logon to
SageNet from any Campus computer. Choose item #3 in the main menu and then
item #4 in the resulting submenu. Your request will be automatically processed
during the night and the information you need to use the Proxy Account will be
e-mailed to your Sage account.
If you do not use the menu system by default at login, you can launch the
menu by typing "menu" (don't type the quotes) at the Unix prompt
(the % sign).
For security reasons, it is not possible to send this information to
another email account or to give this information over the telephone. In order
to protect User Names on SageNet, your Proxy User Name will be different from
your SageNet User Name. Your Proxy Password will also be different and will
not be changeable by the user.

If you do not see the menu system by default at login, you probably have an
older account. You can launch the menu by typing "menu" (don't
type the quotes) at the Unix prompt (the % sign).

If you're in one of the Computer Labs, ask the LabAide for help. If
you're having problems with your Account then contact Marylyn Vogt (X2365)
<vogtm@sage.edu
>. If they can't give
you the help you need then contact the Academic Technologist for that campus:
Your professor is the best contact for application specifics but try our Tutorial
page for general questions about applications, SageNet, and the Internet.

This error message means that you have gone over your pre-determined limit
of disk space on our server. If the message is from PINE you will need
to delete some messages - try to delete the messages taking up the most space,
ones with attachments, for example. Until you do delete some messages
you may not be able to receive mail into your inbox.
If you get this at login you may have to delete some files from your "Home"
directory. Again try for the largest files first, such as graphic images,
photos, your Netscape cache saved e-mail folders, etc. If you let this go you
may have problems accessing your Home directory, getting E-Mail, etc.

To access the Sage Library from Home, you must first have a connection to
SageNet (see "How do I get a Dial-Up Password?" or
"What if I already have an Internet Provider?"),
then telnet to Zeus (or Hopper) and login as yourself. Then select #5
"Library card catalog." from the Menu and enter "library"
as your PIN.
You will then be asked to "Select your terminal type:". You would
normally choose #27 which has VT100 after it.
